Beast-Rulers

Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

Ezekiel 29:3.

Dragons on the Throne

Take another look at that passage: in one breath, God calls Pharaoh “king of Egypt” and, almost immediately, also calls him “the great dragon.” What does that mean?

How could the king be both man and dragon at the same time? A prophetic disclosure of the mystical dual personality of Egypt’s ruler?

The Hebrew word here translated “dragon” is tanniyn which, according to Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary, refers to “a marine or land monster, i.e. sea-serpent or jackal:--dragon, sea-monster, serpent….” Some Bible commentaries explain the reference in terms of a large crocodile, the Nile crocodile. It comes to the same thing: a marine monster; a duplicitous serpent; a dangerous and destructive beast.

That Pharaoh was man and monster meant that there were two sides to that ruler: a natural side that humans saw, and a spiritual side that only the prophet could see through transcendental eyes enabled by the all-seeing God. To the natural eyes of the people who had voted or sworn him into his throne, he was a man, a king; but to the scanner-eyes of the prophet Ezekiel, as God enabled him to see, there was also a spiritual side to that monarch’s personality; he was also a dragon, in fact, a great dragon.

Contact Addresses

Besides the one matter of personalities or identity, there was also the other matter of a ‘contact address.’ There was one side of Pharaoh that sat on a physical throne in the Buckingham Palace of Egypt; there was another side of him with an address in the “rivers.” In the present instance, God was reaching out to him at his ‘other’ address, his physically inaccessible marine location; God was addressing not so much the man on the throne but the dragon in the rivers, as the full text reveals. Put differently, God was actually routing the ‘letter’ to the man on the throne through his other contact address, which seemed the best path to effectively reaching that ruler.

Unlike blind mortals who saw only the one side of their good ruler, God’s prophet was not to be deceived. That king was not altogether man; he was also a beast in a different psychic (or spiritual) realm. He was a god-ified king-monster with the garment of human flesh; a dragon with the vocal ability of man; a beast with a voice – a strong national and media voice that could be aired, heard, obeyed; an imperial beast; a principality with marine territorial claims, announcing, “My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.”

After about 890 years, Ezekiel probably finally had abetter understanding of the mysteries behind the dramatic palace contest that had been staged between the magicians of Pharaoh and Moses his prophetic and native ancestor; a contest at which serpents had been on parade, and the stronger serpent had swallowed the others (Exodus 7:10-12). The throne of Pharaoh was a wily serpentine, dragon throne; and the men who sat on the throne were no less crafty, crooked and venomous, like the dragon-serpent-monster spirit that ruled them from the river.Those many years ago, Moses was a pioneer instrument in judging those gods (Exodus 12:12; Jeremiah 43:12).

Laundered Lies and a Blind Media

If Pharaoh were a masked monster, as the privileged prophetic vision insisted; if he were a dangerous beast, which is what a dragon is, then they daydream who take the dragon for a friendly pet. If that ruler be truly so, then the public democratic image and the presidential pretences to virtue are altogether a strategic deception. If the public image-laundering were thus a political lie, then the voice of the state media is not to be trusted in learning the true identity of Pharaoh. But one wonders, Can the media lie? Can a reputably investigative press be so spiritually naïve?

Treasonable Alternative Visions

Two visions: the popular majority vision of natural eyes, and the counter minority vision of the prophet. Worse still, the prophetic vision was not only an unelectable minority, it was also dangerously unpopular and treasonable, describing “His Royal Majesty” by the disrespectful beastly name of “Great Dragon.”…Very unacceptable to palace protocols.

Not everyone we see on two legs might be altogether man or woman; some are monsters also at another dimension that mortal eyes do not penetrate. Pharaoh was a dragon-man, or more correctly, a man-dragon. His mortal appearance was a deceit, or only a part of the ‘picture.’ He rode the streets of Egypt as man; he also swam the psychic rivers as dragon, as beast-ruler, as a marine monster. Meaning? Simple: he ruled among men by evil dragon powers from the marine spheres. In other words, all men are not merely men; some rulers especially, have another side to their personality. In other words, sitting on many thrones are men and women that are also dragons, or also cobras, or also goats, or also….

How will any land fare whose rulers are people of such clandestine dual personalities? May God open our eyes to see some politicians for who they really are. Some of them are not merely men; some are monsters in the disguise of men.

Not Rulers Only

Might the matter of psychic personality be limited to rulers only? No. Some such simple-looking people as gardeners, cooks, drivers, or even priests, could be implicated as well. After His resurrection, for instance, Jesus seemed to Mary as a gardener, whereas there was a much more potent spiritual side to His personality than the natural looks she had been mistaken by (John 20:15-18). Imagine that your ‘very good’ driver were also a dragon, or a bull; imagine that your dutiful housekeeper were much more than you have hitherto thought; imagine that your gate-man were actually a….

My pastor told a story years ago; it had been narrated to him first-hand. In one of those days of infinite fuel queues at petrol stations in Nigeria, a waiting man had gone into the swampy bush behind the petrol station to relieve himself; it was one of the petrol stations at the head of the church road skirting one of the rivers that run through the city of Port Harcourt. While that fellow was doing his thing in the bush, he suddenly heard a strange movement from the direction of the river, then he saw a big python approach. He was frozen in shock as the python gradually transformed into a pretty young woman who began to preen herself as ladies would usually do before an important outing. He remained frozen as the young womantidied up with her mirror andcrossed the road to the other side. His bush business abruptly terminated, he followed with curious eyes and legs and saw the snake-girl flagging down taxis to take her to a popular hotel (whose name I do not wish not give) in the centre of the city, the vicinities of which are the popular rendezvous of night girls.Some damned and bewitched man was going to take that ‘pretty girl’ home that night. Would that have been a girl or a python? And suppose she had chosen the political podium rather than the popular hotel of red street girls? …Well, we are talking about rulers, so let me get back on track.

The Witness of Daniel

Once upon a time, God opened the eyes of Prophet Daniel the intercessor-parliamentarian to the other side, the spirit side, of some of the beast-rulers of his days. Some of those famous names were such terrestrial dual personalities as goat-kings and ram-kings. While Prophet Ezekiel addressed marine dual personalities such as Pharaoh the dragon-king, Daniel’s prophetic scanner was picking terrestrial psychic personalities in politics. Interestingly, both Daniel and Ezekiel were contemporary prophets in Babylon; they were both exile-ministers in the same region in the same season (Ezekiel 14:14,16; 28:3). One was a minister from the privileged platform of politics and the palace, the other ministered from the ecclesiastical and priestly platform of the general population and the house of God. That both were contemporary ministers seeing similar visions would mean that God was speaking the same ‘language’ independently to His several prophets in that same season; that God was saying the same thing through various vesselsso that by the mouth of two or three witnesses, ‘constitutionally,’ every truth might be established (1 Corinthians 14:29; 2 Corinthians 13:1).

Placing Daniel in contemporary terms, we could say that that intercessor-prophet suddenly saw that Prime Minister X of the Federal Republic of Y, and President Q of the nation of O, were not pure mortals, after all. He suddenly saw why it had been so frustrating trying to relate with them or address their unpleasant practices from the rational podium of common humanity. He finally realized why appeals to human reasoning and feeling had been so futile in curtailing the political and imperial excesses of those rulers; excesses emanating from their true psychic personality. He finally understood that those who tried to solve psychic monsters by mortal means were going to be tragically mistaken.

This is how God interpreted Daniel’s visions of the dual-personality rulers of his (and a future) time:

20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king (Daniel 8:20-21).

More than Metaphors

Could all of this be simply an overstretching of mere metaphors? Were the prophets just being decorative and picturesque in language as they spoke of dragons and goats and rams? Or, beyond the typical symbolisms of prophetic expressions, were they actually reporting their privileged insights into a realm where ordinary eyesdo not penetrate?

It might have been easy to dismiss as an analogy the reference to Pharaoh as a dragon, but when the prophetic voice proceeds to quote those words of the dragon character, we verily have crossed the thresholds of art into the mystic. An analysis of the temper of the words and of the immanent conflict between the opposed forces of God and the dragon seems to confront us with an astralexperience such as Prophet John narrates, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice…” (Revelation 1:10); and such as Apostle Paul also reports: “I was caught up to the third heaven fourteen years ago… and heard things so astounding that they cannot be expressed in words, things no human is allowed to tell” (2 Corinthians 12:2-4, New Living Translation).The issues here are beyond those of figurative language; they are reports from another realm to which natural beings have no access; they are the x-ray report of privileged eyes on misty and chameleonic royalties.

Herod the Fox

I am often my own great critic. While I could not query the unveiling mysteries of dual personalities on thrones, as the Spirit opened the mysteryup to me, and while I already had the mandatory ‘two or threewitnesses’ on the subject,I besought the Lord fora New Testament support. Suddenly, I was taken to Luke 13:32, where Jesus had identifiedHerod His political ruler as a fox. While men called that man Herod (which means, hero-like), it took the Son of God to reveal the beastly identify that that ruleralso carried; it took Jesus to announce in the ears of mortals another name, aterrestrial beastly name, by which the ruler was also tagged in the realms of the spirit.

Herod was not a dragon; he was a fox – a beast-ruler all the same; a crafty, foxy, ruthless ruler whose shows of love for the Jewish nation were actually meant to entrap and destroy oppositions. In the present time, thatwas the Herod that had killed John the Baptist the acclaimed greatest prophet of all times (Matthew 11:11; 14:1-12); in the past, that throne of Herod had killed countless littlechildren in the frustrated attempt to earlyeliminate Jesus from manifestation (Matthew 2:16-18); in the future,the same throne subsequently killed James and put Peter in the line of death (Acts 12:1-3). The throne of Herod was a throne with a bloody profile; a throne that attacked the holy people of God, as beast-rulers are fashioned to do. Jesus could not have used that word merely as a metaphoric adjective, a scornful adjective of the ruler.Jesus was revealing much more about that ruler than mortals had hitherto known.

Is there a spiritual side to the governor of your state, the president of your nation, the manager of your corporation, the aspiring politicians in your country? Have you so long been frustrated by what you have dismissed as an ‘irrational’ and ‘mean man,’ whereas you have actually been dealing ignorantly with a spiritual-beast personality?

Counterfeits and Originals

Whatever Satan does is the pervasion of God’s original. Whatever Satan is, is the corruption of God’s original design. We see the original, for example, in the dual personality of Jesus. Pharaoh was man and dragon; Jesus is man and lion, Lion of the Tribe of Judah, as well Lamb-King (Revelation 5:5; 17:14). Pharaoh was a ruler, a dragon-king; Jesus is King of kings, the Lion-King. Pharaoh’s spiritual address was the rivers; Jesus the Lion locates with Judah.

A Profiling of Beast-Rulers

No man can effectively rule other men being just man; no man can rule other men without a spiritual side to his personality. Of one of the animal-rulers that God revealed to Daniel, it was said, “And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power.” In other words, his greatness, his power, his might shall have its roots in a source outside himself. His ‘success’ or achievements shall be apparent: “he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper,” but he shall also“destroy the mighty and the holy people” (Daniel 8:24). May we see how the New Living Translation puts it:

24 He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause a shocking amount of destruction and succeed in everything he does. He will destroy powerful leaders and devastate the holy people. 25 He will be a master of deception and will become arrogant; he will destroy many without warning. He will even take on the Prince of princes in battle, BUT he will be broken, though not by human power (Daniel 8:24-25, New Living Translation).

Does that sound familiar to you, especially in contemporary global politics? Deception, destruction, deaths, arrogance, undemocratic arbitrary authority “without warning,” the liquidation of opposing “powerful leaders”?

From this passage, we may see that beast-rulers are often characterised by their hidden or open antagonism against God, against godliness, against “the holy people”; they are characterised by how they “destroy wonderfully.” In one policy swoop, they could destroy great values and conventions that fathers and founders had taken years and great pains to build; they could destroy lofty family values, they could destroy severallives;they could destroy infrastructure, etc. There certainly would be many incontestable gains on their scorecard of prosperity, for they “shall prosper,” but the ‘prosperity’ is the camouflage for their evil agenda powered by the beast-spirits that drive them.

The dragon throne of Pharaoh did not rise against the Jews from the inception of the relationship. It needed Joseph initially to survive a crucial and impending famine. After having thus used that holy man and gained power, it turned in the never-dreamed future against the people of Joseph: “master of deception.”The Herod that mindlessly slaughtered countless children and brought widespread tears on the land had been a voluntary (but foxy) member of the Sunday school class of the Jewish Bible scholars, as well as being a very hospitable host of international preachers and an avid listener to their messages (Matthew 2:2-8). The Herod that killed James and nearly killed Peter was a ruler who “pleased the Jews” (Acts 12:3). The one that killed John the Baptist used to be a disgruntled member of that preacher’s congregation, with his wife (Matthew 14:3-4; Mark 6:20).Herod’s present fancy romance with the Sanhedrin does not becloud the eyes of the seeing from his mass murderous potentials for the future.

Beast-rulers are also characterised by their arrogant and self-centred language. Hear Pharaoh, for instance: “My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself” (Ezekiel 29:3).Their speeches are often full of “I” and “me” and “mine,” like the notorious manifesto of Lucifer: “IwillASCEND…,I willEXALT myTHRONE above…:I will sit…:I willASCEND above...; Iwill be like the MOST HIGH” (Isaiah 14:13-14). The Herod that killed James spoke so similarly proudly that the audience gave him the ovation of God. The Almighty could not wait for him to finish his state-of-the-nation address before an angel was dispatched to strike him to an instant public shameful death (Acts 12:21-23).

God’s posture to such personalities is spelt out in clear language as in the case of Pharaoh: “I am against thee”(Ezekiel 29:3); and in the case of Lucifer: “Yet thou shalt be brought down” (Isaiah 14:15).It does not matter who supports whom God is against; it does not matter who is on the side of what God is out to destroy.

Some men are dragon-rulers; others are Lion-Kings. Which are you? That you know nothing of your ruler’s spiritual side does not mean that it does not exist. If God had not shown it to the prophet Ezekiel, who would have known that Pharaoh the powerful king of Egypt also had a mystical dragon personality to his royal profile? If God had not revealed it to the prophet Daniel, who would have known that the ‘prosperity,’ the successes, the might, the power, the wonderful acts of that ruler had an origin in an evil spirituality? The media will never tell you that, because the media does not have the eyes for seeing it.

How many Germans knew that Adolf Hitler was not just the nationalist he posed to be, but a Satanist? Who does not know the many Islamic marabouts that are traditionally imported to ‘fumigate’ Nigeria’s presidential palace in given regimes, and the weekly sacrifices of cows buried alive or burnt up there on holy Fridays? What is the spiritual side to the personality of such a ruler? Dragon? Black horse? Scorpion? Where is their spiritual address? Judah, like the Lion? The marine spheres of the rivers, like Pharaoh? The terrestrial spheres of the desert, like the rams and goats? Or TheForestof mysteries?

Contending with Beasts

How might we effectively engage such beast-rulers in spiritual warfare? I do not boast that I have the encyclopaedic answer, but we may start by using the weapon that the prophet Ezekiel employed against Pharaoh. We may start by prophesying unto them in the words that Ezekiel received from God against Pharaoh the dragon-king. After all, the fathers have told us how God told them that His word in our mouth is as powerful as His word in His mouth.

3 Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

4 But I will put hooks in thy jaws, and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scales[division in the hitherto united enemy camp, as in Genesis 11:7-8], and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers, and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales [spiritual dispossession and dis-location].

5 And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness[exile unto death], thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields[public disgrace, as unto Herod in Acts 12:23]; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven [plagues, death].

6 And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD[godly revival], because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.

7 When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and rend all their shoulder: and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand[old books opened, past sins recalled].

8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will bring a sword upon thee, and cut off man and beast out of thee[violent armed protest, civil unrest].

9 And the land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste[economic recession]; and they shall know that I am the LORD: because he hath said, The river is mine, and I have made it.

10 Behold, therefore I am against thee, and against thy rivers[judgement on the spiritual addresses], and I will make the land of Egypt utterly waste and desolate, from the tower of Syene even unto the border of Ethiopia (Ezekiel 29:3-10).
